Why Custos Was Created

In an emergency, the people closest to the situation are often the first ones able to help.

But willingness to help is not always enough. Community volunteers need practical training, the right equipment and opportunities to keep their skills current.

Custos was created to help strengthen this first layer of community response — giving local volunteers and organisations the training, resources and support they need to act effectively while professional emergency services are on their way.

We work alongside volunteers, community organisations, businesses and emergency services to help communities become better prepared to respond when help is needed.

Starting in the Franschhoek Valley, Custos is building a practical community safety model that can grow and support other communities over time.
